JUSTIS.com Web site, launched in June 1999, provides legal researchers with
Internet access to some of the largest archives of legal material in the UK.
These include the full text of 134 years of The Law Reports and 46 years of the
Weekly Law Reports. The JUSTIS.com Internet service will later this month also
include Statutes from 1235 and a new Human Rights database.
Context was
also the 1997 LOTIES winner for 'Best Legal Publication on CD-ROM' and for
'Legal Technology Newcomer of the Year'.
The Cochrane
Collaboration is an international organisation that started up in 1993 as a
response to Archie Cochrane's call for systematic, up-to-date reviews in
healthcare. Cochrane was an epidemiologist who observed that:
* · Healthcare practice is not always
based on good evidence
* There is
too much information for any individual to access and use
* Resources
are always limited, so it is all the more important to know which interventions
work
The
Collaboration now comprises centres in 15 countries, 50 topic-based Review
groups and about 6000 members. The collaboration members hand search journals
in 19 countries, produce Cochrane reviews, moderate the feedback system, ensure
that methodology, statistics and software used in the writing of reviews is
state of the art and that consumer and other groups are represented.
The main
output of The Cochrane Collaboration is systematic reviews of the effects of
healthcare interventions. These systematic reviews are published electronically
in successive issues of The Cochrane Library.
Cochrane
Reviews Database
A full text
articles database reviewing the effects of healthcare. The reviews are highly
structured and systematic, with evidence included or excluded on the basis of
explicit quality criteria, to minimize bias.
Data are
often combined statistically (with meta-analysis) to increase the power of the
findings of numerous studies, each too small to produce reliable results
individually.
Cochrane
reviews are regularly updated as new evidence emerges, and in response to
comments and criticisms.
DARE includes
structured abstracts of systematic reviews from around the world, which have
been critically appraised by reviewers at the NHS Centre for Reviews and
Dissemination at the University of York, England.
DARE also
contains references to other reviews which may be useful for background
information. More information about DARE can be obtained from the NHS Centre
for Reviews and Dissemination home page.
CCTR is a
bibliography of controlled trials identified by contributors to the Cochrane
Collaboration and others, as part of an international effort to hand search the
world's journals and create an unbiased source of data for systematic reviews.
CCTR includes
reports published in conference proceedings and in many other sources not
currently listed in MEDLINE or other bibliographic databases.
* · The Cochrane Review Methodology

* A handbook

Ovid
Technologies released Clinical Evidence, a searchable electronic database of
clinical questions and evidence-based answers produced by the BMJ Publishing
Group, publisher of the prestigious British Medical Journal. Ovidâ€(tm)s
exclusive searchable electronic version of Clinical Evidence augments the
existing evidence-based medicine offerings available via Ovid Online, including
the popular Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews and extensive linking with Ovid
MEDLINE and the Journals@Ovid full text database.
About
Clinical Evidence
Clinical
Evidence is designed to help clinicians make evidence-based medicineâ€"a
burgeoning movement in healthcareâ€"part of their everyday practice.
Updated and expanded bi-annually with monthly electronic updates to begin next
year, the database contains hundreds of clinical questions from a wide range of
clinical specialties, and answers that cover the known effects of treatments
and interventions based on the best available medical research.
The questions
are selected by leading physicians in conjunction with other practicing
physicians and patient groups for relevance to clinical practice, rather than
for availability of research evidence. BMJ researchers search the Cochrane
Library, ACP Journal Club and other EBM sources, and use validated quality
filters to retrieve the best available evidence from MEDLINE , EMBASE and
PsycLit. A team of clinicians and information scientists then appraises the
abstracts of systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials using
recognized evidence-based validation criteria. Practicing clinicians with
expertise in epidemiology and EBM then summarize the results for inclusion in
Clinical Evidence. All Clinical Evidence authors are experts in their
respective specialties.
"Weâ€(tm)re
very excited to be releasing Clinical Evidence on Ovid," said Fiona
Godlee, Executive Editor of Clinical Evidence. "It is our hope that by
presenting summaries of the evidence, we can make the best available evidence
from the medical literature more widely applicable to clinical practice. At the
same time, we hope to help researchers and clinicians alike to identify areas
where research is lacking or inconclusive."
Evidence-Based
Medicine (EBM) is a fast-growing movement in healthcare that aims to bring the
best evidence from medical research to the bedside, clinic, and community. The
practice of EBM is supported by healthcare institutions worldwide, including
the American College of Physicians (ACP), the British Medical Association, the
Cochrane Collaboration, the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and
the Canadian Coordinating Office for Health Technology Assessment.
Ovid
Technologies, announced a licensing agreement with Harcourt, Inc. to offer electronic
full-text versions of several key clinical textbooks and journals published by
the Harcourt-owned W.B. Saunders, Mosby, and Churchill Livingstone imprints.
The agreement comes as part of a larger transaction whereby Ovid parent company
Wolters Kluwer has sold its one-third interest in MDConsult, a Web-based
clinical information service, to Harcourt, Inc.
The Harcourt
textbooks and journals will be added to the Books@Ovid and Journals@Ovid
full-text databases this summer.
"We are

titles under license. With a focus on medical, nursing, and drug-related
content, Books@Ovid aggregates and delivers to the desktop texts from different
publishers under a single search engine and Web interface to search, retrieve,
browse, and display book content.

Long
well-known for its value-added version of the definitive MEDLINE medical
research database produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), Ovid
Technologies tannounced that it has added PreMEDLINE for access via Ovid
Online. PreMEDLINE is the NLM's in-process database for MEDLINE. It provides
basic citation information and abstracts before the citation is indexed with
NLM's MeSH heading and added to MEDLINE. It is a vital resource for medical
researchers who need up-to-the-minute information.
Ovid is
providing free online PreMEDLINE access to all current and future Ovid Online
and Local-Online Hybrid MEDLINE customers. Ovid's versions of PreMEDLINE and
MEDLINE can be searched together as a single database with the new 4.1.0
version of the Ovid Web Gateway search and retrieval software, just released for
Ovid Online customers.
Ovid will
provide daily updates of PreMEDLINE on Ovid Online. Records will appear with
the tag "MEDLINE record in process" until they are available in full
form in the MEDLINE database. Ovid MEDLINE will continue to be updated weekly,
as the NLM completes its own updates.
"At Ovid
we made our reputation with researchers by offering a feature-packed
implementation of MEDLINE with an innovative search and retrieval
interface," said Ovid President and CEO Debbie Hull. "Now, Ovid users
